Michael Phillips

Wilmington - Michael Phillips, a distinguished scholar and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 89. Born on February 22, 1937, inNew York, NY, Michael led a life rich in intellectual pursuit and artistic achievement.

 A tenured full professor of art, Michael dedicated his career to the exploration and teaching of art, leaving an indelible mark on both his students and colleagues. His passion for art was complemented by his deep interests in travel, European culture, the French language, painting, philosophy, and quantum physics. These interests not only enriched his professional life but also his personal journey, as he traveled extensively and engaged deeply with the world around him.

Michael's contributions to the field of art were recognized through numerous accolades. He was honored to be included in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in American Art." His exceptional talent was further acknowledged when he received the prestigious Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. He was also a runner-up for the Prix de Rome and served as a visiting artist at the American Academy of Rome. Additionally, he was a recipient of a CAPS fellowship in painting from the state of New York and received a major grant in painting from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy Phillips, Michael is survived by hisdevoted wife, Jacquelyne Blair; his twin brother, Frank Phillips; and his cherished children, Matthew Phillips, Shoshanna DeAtley, Ariel Heicher, Alexandra Phillips, and Judah Phillips-Blair.

His family and friends remember him as an extraordinary person who was incredibly loved and will be incredibly missed.

Services for Michael are not currently scheduled. His family appreciates the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time and invites those who knew him to celebrate his life and legacy in their own special ways.
