Listen to Obituary

Winnabow - Larry “Scarey,” “Scratch,” “Dad,” and “Papa” was a man who believed in hard work, family, and always being there for the people he loved. He started his career as a trainman on the D&H railroad while owning and operating Turf Masters Lawn Care ( he always took great pride in his lawn & loved spending hours in it) , and before leaving NY for NC, Larry turned his childhood dream into a reality, opening “Scarey’s Dream Dogs and Cream” restaurant while supporting his wife’s dream of “The Cranberry Cupboard” Country store.

He worked day and night his entire life and continued working until the day he physically couldn’t. He finished his final working years at Bradford Products as the maintenance and lawn care man, a job he took great pride in. Even during his hardest days, he would talk about getting back to work and back to the golf course soon.

For more than 65 years, Larry built a true hometown legacy through hard work, friendship, kindness, and the will to succeed. From his days in New York State, to the final chapter of his life in Winnabow, North Carolina, he made an impact on hundreds of people who knew him. No matter where life took him, Larry had a way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and comfortable! Later in life, Larry and his wife, Janet made the move to Winnabow, North Carolina, to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Family was always his greatest priority, and being nearby to share their greatest moments, milestones, and memories meant everything to him.

He loved golf, good conversation, and making friends everywhere he went. The golf course was one of his favorite places to be, and he spent much of his time there doing something he truly loved. From New York to North Carolina, he became well known for his infamous golf shot, the kind where someone would yell, “SCAREY EGGER!” and somehow the ball would find its way out of the wilderness and right back into play. It became one of the many stories and memories that made people laugh and love being around him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Mullen Egger; children, Ryan Egger, Kristen (Blake) Allen, and Amy (Phil) Quattrini; grandchildren, Everly Egger, McCoy, Paxton and Bekett Allen, and Logan and Makenzi Quattrini; sister, Karen (Wally) Mix; sisters-in-law, Susan Egger, Ella Overton, Linda (David) Ryan, Mary (Mark) Schuster and Chris Freeland; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Egger and Helen Scott Overton; brothers, Ted Egger and Daniel Overton; and mother-in-law, Helen Mullen.

Above all else, Larry loved his family. Along with his wife and three children, his grandchildren were among the greatest joys of his life. He never missed an opportunity to support them and always made sure he had a front row seat at their sporting events and school functions, even if it meant moving a few chairs to get there. His grandchildren will forever remember hearing his voice cheering them on from the sidelines.

Larry passed away surrounded by his wife of 42 years and two children, leaving behind countless memories, great advice, lessons, laughter, and love that will continue to live on through all who knew him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Childrens' Fund.

A Celebration Gathering will be held at a later date; any updates will be posted here.
