Karen Metz

Wilmington- Karen Christine Metz, loving mother, wife, and a woman of remarkable strength, passed away surrounded by the love of her family. Karen will be remembered for her fierce devotion to her children, her steady determination, and the warmth she shared so freely with those she loved.

Karen earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and went on to receive her Master of Business Administration from St. John’s University. A talented and dedicated accountant, she worked throughout her career with Meals on Wheels of Staten Island, The Town of Hollyridge, Catholic Charities, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Merrill Lynch. Through her hard work and determination, she was able to build a life she was proud of and provide for her family, even purchasing and financing three homes over the course of her life — a testament to her strength and perseverance.

A lifelong Staten Island, NY resident, Karen fell in love with Wilmington in 2003 while visiting friends and eventually made it her home. She was a lifelong friend of the church and carried her faith with her throughout her life.

An avid sports fan and athlete in her youth, Karen played basketball, softball, and enjoyed swimming and diving. She carried that love of sports into adulthood and even coached her children when they were young. She also enjoyed gardening, running, spending time at the beach, and watching basketball. One of her greatest joys was her dogs — Sasha, Tara, Noel, Arya, Atlas, Sky, and Coley (many more)— who were treasured members of her family.

Above all else, Karen was fiercely protective and deeply devoted to her children. She made sure they never wanted for anything and stood as their constant source of strength and support. Her love was unwavering, and her presence was a steady foundation in their lives.

Karen was preceded in death by her daughter, Kimberly Lynn Metz; her mother, Francis Franzen; her father, Carl Franzen; and her sister, Carol Franzen.

She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas G. Metz; her son, Thomas C. Metz; her daughter, Carolyn Metz; her brother, Richard Franzen; and her brother, Carl Franzen. She will also be deeply missed by extended family members, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held at the family home at 6:00 p.m. on February 18.

Karen will be forever missed and lovingly remembered in the hearts of her family and friends.
